| Welcome to the Advent 2009 issue of the Alleyn’s Alumni Ebulletin | |
|
I am sure you will be very pleased to hear that our pupils had an exceptional year of exam results which, given the challenges of the last academic year’s enforced closures because of snow and swine 'flu, make their achievement even more impressive and pleasing. I am aware that School is well-placed to hold events whereby a cross-section of alumni can meet and make contacts. With this in mind I propose to hold a series of professional networking events for those alumni working in |
the same sectors in order to oil the wheels of
realising professional opportunities for each other. I have designed a
short online poll and welcome your input on shaping how these
events might be structured. |

Club news Annual Dinner: 26 September 2009 This Saturday, over 140 guests will be attending the Club's Annual Dinner at the School. Club President, Nancy Carroll (Brading's, 1985-92), has chosen to celebrate 30 years (or thereabouts) of co-education at Alleyn's at the dinner so guests can expect to see a few reminders of the 1970s on the night. Diana Quick is Nancy's guest of honour (subject to professional engagements).
The next Burbage Theatre Company production is Confusions by Alan Ayckbourn. The play runs from 15-17 October at the Michael Croft Theatre at Alleyn’s. Tickets £6 (concs £4) available from christina.milne@mps.org.uk, 07802 826774 or on the door.
Are you in the picture showing 1999 leavers? There's a reunion for you and your fellow classmates later this year. Advance notices about the reunion have already been sent out to all those alumni who were in the class of 1992-99, regardless of whether they joined at 11 or left before 18. Please follow this link to see the names of those people for whom the Club no longer has contact details. Any help in locating them and spreading the word about the reunion would be much appreciated. The reunion will take place at the Clubhouse in Burbage Road and will start at 8pm. Tickets for the Midlands reunion to see Nancy Carroll (and her husband) in the RSC’s production of Twelfth Night have flown out of the door. To be fair, when planning this event, I erred on the side of caution and only ordered 30 tickets and, on seeing such a high demand, promptly had to buy the final ten tickets remaining for that night’s performance in order to satisfy customers. There is now one ticket left – please let me know ASAP if you would like to take it up. To see who is coming to the reunion and an outline of the evening’s programme, please follow this link. Reunion party for this summer’s leavers If you left Alleyn’s this summer (see above photo of the 2009 leavers) and still like the security of your old chums, the Club is holding a party for you at the Clubhouse on Tuesday 29 December. Contact me for further details. Professional networking opportunities At the recent 20 and 30-year reunion, guests were asked if they would be interested in supporting events to promote professional networking opportunities. There was an overwhelmingly positive response from the to whom I spoke people. I would therefore like to gather a wider cross-section of views from our membership so that I can ensure we host the right event/s in the right place/s. I would be very grateful if you could take part in a short online poll. Thank you for your help on this matter. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you would like to discuss this further. There is a new Alleyn’s group on professional networking site, LinkedIn. To join it, please go to the LinkedIn site and send your request to me [Susannah Schofield]. Please note, for ease of locating the group, I was advised to spell the group ‘Alleyns School’ so advance and abject apologies to Stefan and all the other Angels of the Apostrophe. Lost spectacles in Pimm’s Tent Chris Nelson found a pair of spectacles in the Pimm’s Tent on Founder’s Day. The case is embossed with the Boots logo and a small label has the following written on it : B Dark-Old. If they are yours – or you know whose they might be, please contact me and I can arrange for them to be returned.
Peter Mewes (Roper’s, 1966-72), now based in Thailand, is pleased to report that more and more alumni are visiting Thailand, ‘particularly my good mate (who I shared a desk with in the 3rd year) Ian Stewart who should be here later this year.' Peter continues: ‘Unfortunately, my footballing has been temporarily curtailed having broken my leg and snapped both ankle ligaments in a recent tournament when playing for Pattaya City’. However, Peter sends a photo from a few months ago showing a number of players (including Peter, front row, far right) representing England ‘in our successful defence of the annual Pattaya International Beach Football Cup’. Broken leg aside, Peter writes that ‘at 55 I suppose I have one more comeback left in me and hope, at least, to be a kicking a ball on the beach with ‘Stoker’ [Ian Stewart] later in December’. If anyone who knows Peter is travelling to Thailand, please feel free to email me. Peter extends the invitation to the Golf Society adding temptingly that ‘there are some great courses here!’ |
